We Customize Vaccinations According to Your Pet’s Needs
Relevant vaccinations can vary from one pet to the next. Outside of “core” vaccinations, we offer lifestyle specific vaccinations to fully protect our patients.
Vaccinations we may recommend for your dog:
- Bordetella
- Canine influenza
- Rattlesnake
- Lyme
Various parts of the United States and the world have seen outbreaks of canine influenza, and in its most severe form can cause secondary infections like pneumonia. Though most dogs develop only mild symptoms, since the virus is spread through mucus carried throughout the air, any dog who is in frequent contact with other dogs will benefit from vaccination. Star Hill Veterinary Clinic carries the bivalent vaccine from Zoetis, which offers protection against canine influenza’s primary strains, H3N2 and H3N8.
Bordetella is similar to canine influenza, but is a bacterial infection. The incidence of rattlesnake bites in pets is most common between April and October, according to UCDavis Veterinary Medicine. The canine rattlesnake vaccine protects dogs from their dangerous venom in case their bitten during an altercation. Our area is no stranger to snakes and dogs may run into rattlesnakes during activities like hiking.
Vaccinations and testing we may recommend for your cat:
- Vaccination against feline leukemia (FELV) for adults, though we vaccinate all kittens
- Testing for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
If your cat spends time outside unsupervised, they’re a good candidate for protection from both feline leukemia and FIV. We protect all kittens from FELV, because they’re susceptible to infection and this can lead to serious immune deficiency issues. FIV is primarily passed through cat bites. While male cats who roam outside are at the highest risk for FIV, any cat who goes outside can contract it. If you have a big heart and like to adopt stray cats, we offer testing for FELV and FIV, so you can keep any of your other cats safe from infection.
