According to a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, microchipped pets who found their way to animal shelters were returned to their owners in much larger amounts than ones who were not microchipped. How Microchipping Works
Because microchipping takes only a small amount of time and requires no anesthesia, we can add this valuable identification method onto any of our other services. Microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are painlessly injected under your pet’s skin, between their shoulder blades. The microchip contains a unique identification code. This code is stored in a database with your contact information attached. If your pet becomes lost, the majority of U.S. animal shelters and veterinary practices carry an electronic scanner to read microchips in displaced pets. The Datamars microchip we use at Star Hill Veterinary Clinic is ISO compliant; This means if you were to travel to or relocate to Europe, electronic scanners will still help identify your loyal companion.

Having your horse microchipped is also the smart choice to quickly identify them – in case the unexpected happens. Microchipping is especially important, if you plan on ever selling your horse or entering them into competition. The U.S. Equestrian Federation cites that microchipping increases consumer confidence in horse sales and helps keep them safe. Furthermore, microchipping has become standard procedure in the equestrian community. Just like microchipping a cat or dog, microchipping a horse is a quick, painless procedure, which will likely last their entire life. For horses, the microchip device will be inserted into their nuchal ligament, which is located just under their mane.
